Selection criterion

Not a list of firsts. A map of new possibilities.

Historical priority is often disputed. What matters here is the moment a mechanic became legible, reproducible, and left a visible line of inheritance.

01

A new verb

The player gained an action, or a form of control, that had barely been seen before.

02

New behavior from the world

Space, enemies or rules began to answer differently, and to generate new decisions.

03

A recognizable descendant

The idea can be traced into genres and systems that are still developing today.

Note on the research

This timeline is a hypothesis, not a verdict

Many early games existed in several versions and circulated outside commercial channels. The wording here deliberately separates first appearance from historical significance.

Every card links to a supporting source. For disputed dates and priorities, it is worth checking the archives of The Strong and the Smithsonian, interviews with the creators, and the surviving code.
